In 2025, Tagata Moana Hui Foundation hosted three community ʻOhana Baby Showers in Kīhei (Maui), Kalihi (Oʻahu), and Lāʻie (Oʻahu) to address gaps in maternal health access among underserved populations. Across the three events, 77 mothers were served, the majority identifying as Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI). These gatherings were intentionally designed to be ʻohana-centered, welcoming partners, keiki, and kūpuna alongside expecting and postpartum mothers.

HRSA-supported funding directly enabl ed the preparation and distribution of fully stocked diaper bags for participating mothers. Each diaper bag included essential newborn and postpartum care itemssuch as diapers, wipes, onesies, grooming kits, nursing pads, creams, and related supplies. These items were identified through community feedback as immediate, high-need resources that many families
struggle to afford during pregnancy and the early postpartum period. Mothers consistently described the diaper bags as both practical and relieving. One participant shared, “Thankful & blessed to be a part of today baby shower. I am set & ready!” Another reflected, “There are no words to describe how truly blessed & thankful my little ʻohana is.” Several mothers expressed that receiving these supplies reduced stress and helped them feel more prepared to care for their newborns, particularly in households experiencing financial strain.

The diaper bag distribution complemented broader service delivery at each event, where mothers were also connected to medical providers, Community Health Workers (CHWs), and social service organizations. Together, these efforts strengthened care pathways and reinforced HRSA’s goals of improving maternal health access, reducing disparities, and supporting culturally responsive, community-based interventions.
