Black women across the United States – particularly in California – experience disproportionately high rates of maternal mortality and morbidity. These risks are significantly amplified among individuals with Sickle Cell Disease or Trait (SCD/T), who face elevated chances of miscarriage, preeclampsia, preterm birth, stillbirth, and maternal death when the condition is not adequately managed. Adolescents and young adults with SCD/T also encounter unique psychosocial challenges during the transition from pediatric to adult care, especially related to reproductive decision‑making and partner selection.
