UTRGV Maternal Health Research Center

Texas has one of the highest rates of mothers dying from pregnancy-related causes across the US, and since 2006, these deaths have gone up by 87%. Factors like poverty, unsafe or unstable housing, and other long-term social challenges can combine to affect the health of mothers and babies. These challenges vary by community and are a big reason why some areas have worse health outcomes than others. Pregnancy and the time after birth are important moments when we can support mothers and help prevent health problems. To improve maternal health in South Texas, we need creative solutions that go beyond the doctor’s office — solutions that include support at home, in the community, and through changes in systems that impact health.
