Population Health Informatics and Disparities

Population Health Informatics and Disparities

The elevated risk of pregnancy-related complications alongside substance use during pregnancy is a critical public health crisis that impacts both the mother and their developing children. Pregnant and postpartum women affected by substance use experience complex and intersecting challenges, including co-occurring physical and mental health conditions and persistent barriers to high-quality care. These challenges disproportionately burden underserved and low-income populations. This project seeks to address these disparities by leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to advance maternal health research, identify key risk factors, and inform data-driven interventions that promote health and recovery for vulnerable women.

Center Goals

This project aims to reduce maternal health disparities through the application of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and maternal health informatics by:

  • Addressing health disparities by investigating the clinical, social determinants of health (SDoH), and other risk factors that contribute to the high-risk pregnancy-related complications, including the conditions associated with substance use disorders (SUD) and mental health.
  • Supporting residential treatment and recovery programs for pregnant and postpartum women within the Elam Mental Health Center (EMHC) at Meharry Medical College (Meharry), one of the historically black medical colleges (HBCU) in the United States.
  • Advancing maternal health research, training, and innovation within the Biomedical Data Science and Data Science programs at Meharry’s School of Applied Computational Sciences, with a focus on developing and applying AI/ML methods to real-world maternal health challenges and promoting a diverse workforce in maternal health informatics and health disparities.
